THE ITALIAN SPINONE

The Italian Spinone is a breed of gundog, believed to be one of the oldest, traditionally used for tracking, pointing and retrieving. The origins of the Spinoni are not certain but the modern origins are from the Piedimonte region, in the north-west region of Italy. The name Spinone derives from the Italian word 'spina', meaning thorn or prickle.

The Spinone is squarely built (the length of the body is approximately equal to the height at the withers). It is a strong-boned, solidly built dog with a well-muscled body and limbs that are adaptable to any type of ground, but are at their best in woodlands and marshes and are exceptionally strong swimmers having webbed paws. The Spinone typically has a relaxed trotting gait, which is characteristic of the breed, and is capable of working at a steady pace all day. They make a great running partner as they are content to lope alongside their owner and not run off. Spinoni are often described as having human-like eyes, and has an expression that shows intelligence and understanding.

The Italian Spinone enjoys the company of other dogs and love human companionship, being content to occupy your space. The breed is easy going, docile and patient and well known for being loving and gentle with children. The breed is not known for any aggression, but like all dogs, needs good socialisation at an early age.  Because of their intelligence, the Italian Spione is easy to train being quick learners although some can be stubborn. They can be very sensitive so respond best to motivational training and a soft, firm voice.

The Italian Spinone can be a very active breed and generally do not fair well in a kennel situation. It can be more than happy in a small yard and does not necessarily need acres of land. The small garden combined with regular walks would suit a Spinone well. The Italian Spinone tends to gain weight very easily. They are an active dog, but will be happy with one good walk a day. They usually love to swim and are very strong swimmers.

The Italian Spinone has harsh, thick and flat wire coat, with little undercoat making them an easy dog to maintain. They require brushing or combing once or twice a week and do shed hair regularly especially if kept indoors. Dirt generally does not stick to their coats and too many baths can soften their coat. They do have a tendency to slobber due to it's long beard and lip folds. Regular attention to their feet and ears is required to trim hair growth.

They are a slow maturing dog, generally reaching maturity around 4 years of age and usually live between 9 - 13 years. Dogs range from 59-69 cm in height and weigh 34-39 kg. Bitches range from 58-64 cm in height and weigh 29-34 kg. Their colourings are white, white with orange speckling or markings, orange roan, white with chestnut brown markings and brown roan.
